Powell Paint Center LOVE

As a designer, and a homeowner, when I need quality paint I go to Powell Paint Center here in Portland, Oregon.

Even though I live in NoPo, I will drag my tired little self down to 52nd and SE Powell at 7:30 in the morning if my clients are in need of paint samples.

I do this because the staff at PPC have been “doing” paint since 1961. Because they are friendly and answer questions with earnest know-how and a smile. Because no color match is an issue. Because they’ll greet my requests for draw-downs with only half a groan. Because they are paint gurus and their pricing is fair. Because they represent lines such as Benjamin Moore, Pratt & Lambert, Yolo, etc.

To be sure, I’ve been gaga for color since I was a child. My favorite place to be, when I was young, was biding time in the aisles of my hometown hardware store while my father bought salt peter and fishing licenses…I spent loads of time perusing the paint chips, picking out colors that spoke to me and pocketing them because I could, marveling at the hues and tones and variety.

Colors have always reminded me of life…cooking colors, nature’s colors, colors you can’t find ANYWHERE in nature, colors that spoke of home and hearth, and of travel. These color chips could do anything…in my mind, they could change an entire landscape or a life.

I still feel giddy nearly every time I walk into Powell Paint Center because the entire back wall of the store is filled to the brim with color. I see endless possibilities when I walk in through the door. I see fresh interiors and exteriors that imbue their owners with a sense of pride and accomplishment, whatever ambiance they intend to convey.

You can find me at Powell Paint Center every Thursday afternoon, from noon to 3pm, where I give free color consultations to folks looking to change things up in their homes and offices. I spend between ten minutes to an hour with each person, exploring their needs and coming up with color solutions that resonate with them. Often they walk away with small, inexpensive sample jars of paint, or at the very least giant paper/paint chips that will greatly inform their decisions. Their gratitude is abundant and it always fills me with contentment. Sometimes these consultations turn into larger paid projects and fieldwork, and often they turn into friendships.

It is always interesting to me that what comes to me naturally as the ability to know which colors go well with one another is often a foreign concept to the men and women I help each week. It feels so good knowing that I get to send them up to the front desk with thoughtful color selections well in hand, up to the good people who know more about paint formulas and applications than I do.

I often follow my clients up to the front desk to hear for myself more about which paint is preferred for painting over rusty metal or concrete steps, or how to determine which nap of roller is best for which wall texture. I truly learn something new from the staff at Powell Paint every week! My clients walk away with high-quality paint, color that is intensely personal, and the knowledge of how to apply it well the first time. I love this place.

So, if you find yourself in need of fresh new color this season, please consider becoming a patron of Powell Paint Center. And if you want help determining the perfect palette, you know where to find me!

I’ll be back soon with details about an incredible line of paint from famed New York-based artist, Donald Kaufman, now offered to the Portland Metro area through Powell Paint Center. I’ve never seen a more beautiful, painterly paint! I’ll be gleaning more hard facts about Donald Kaufman’s paint this week and next, and look forward to sharing what I learn!

‘Till then…Happy Spring!

Onward, upward!

The Haven Maven is back in effect. After a brief interlude with a prospective business partner, I'm back out on my own and busy as a bee!

I'm settling into a large new-construction job (paint chips, and tile samples, and drywall dust, oh my!). I'm also helping to plan a kitchen for a young couple with kids and getting ready to faux finish a dining room for a lovely family near Reed College.

In the meantime, you can still find me giving expert (and free) paint/color consultations at Powell Paint Center (SE 52nd and Powell) on Thursday and Friday afternoons, from noon-3p. Come in and let me color you up!

I'll keep you up to speed a little more regularly now. Expect pics soon!

Thanks to all who supported my efforts at Ease. Ease is now operating fully under the tutelage of Elizabeth Daniels. For future custom-furniture and artwork related projects through Ease, please contact Elizabeth at 503-206-4972. She'll also be selling a bunch of new, small local wares...so please be on the look out for them.

If you have interior consultancy needs (want fresh paint, new flooring, or tile?), please don't hesitate to call me at 503-984-6210.

Happy Spring!

Third Thursday Art opening for Barb Jones Griggs!

Come see the BIG, Beautiful, colorful, and wondrous fine art of Barb Griggs.

Butterflies, fawns, travel trailors, buddhas, flowers, and automobiles...

These icons are blown-up and artfully posterized on fun, fabulous colorful reclaimed stryofoam "canvases". These are extremely lightweight and are an attempt to keep this harmful, non-biodegradeable material out of our landfill! The result is suprisingly beautiful and effective.

It is also affordable...for you! These are huge pieces brought to you for under $500. MANY are between $50-100!!! Think huge and turquoise, spring pink, golden orangy-yellow, hot orange and cerulean blue.

LOVE 'em! See you tonight!

Thank You!

Wow.

"Thank You" to everyone who made it out to our Opening Party! There were over 250 of you...we ran out of wine and cups and grab-bags faster than we could say "Ease on in"! We had a ton of fun, talked shop with everyone, and stood alongside you while ogling the wares of our fine artists and craftsmen. Couldn't have been better.

Elizabeth and I are currently juggling several custom projects and color consultations, and having some serious fun finding new pieces for the showroom. The latest additions are finely detailed ceramic jizo figurines crafted by a fellow who hails from a Buddhist Temple located in Clatskamie. Jizo are protectors of women, children, and travelers.

Our projects include a custom Teacher's Chair and Music Table for a violinist of the Oregon Symphony, a dining table made of reclaimed wood, a set of side tables, and a custom coffee table.

This week also brought us visits from Oregon Home Magazine, Portland Sugar, and Portland Picks. We must be doing something right!

A collaborative effort between Ease and local Photographer, Bryan Hoybrook, got under way at the start of the week, as well. A very congenial fellow with a great eye. Please take a look at his work sometime: http://www.bryanhoybook.com

Oh, I could go on and on...alas, I have dinner to make and Clash of the Titans to watch. A little relaxation is in order.

Save the Date!

Whew!

Elizabeth and I have been busy culling product, arranging for new artisans to show, picking paint colors for the space and designing the shops new floor plan. We are so close to rearranging everything, I can almost taste it!

We'll be creating a more intimate physical space and bringing an elegant order to the showroom. I simply cannot wait. But, what I'm most excited for are the new collaborators we are bringing on board. To name a few...

Ben Clark--gorgeous reclaimed wood tables, rolling television carts, and armoires.

Moonwoods, llc-- recycled wood spectacles (!!!) and beautifully crafted wooden rings.

Greg Simons-- custom wood and metalwork fused into some fantastic table designs and intriguing stacked plywood vaseware.

Ben Cunin-- cast concrete lounge chairs and tables.

Leah Pellegrini--super cool glass mobiles made out of local material from Bullseye Glass.

Ease has also been persuing collaborations with Interstate Flooring Company and Powell Paint to develope a Colors and Surfaces Design Center in our store. We will have a dedicated area in the store where clients can sit down (with moi) to reflect on and design everything from furniture to entire color palette's for their homes.

We will strive to represent top-quality sustainable products. Our commitment is to obtain for our clients an affordable price!

We will have samples of these items in the store:
Unique Carpets Shagtastic Wool Rug Collection
J-Mish Wool carpet (and others!)
Solida Cork flooring
Eco-Spec Counter top material
Benjamin Moore Natura and Aura Paint (I get to customize my own palette!)
and many more...

We'll be celebrating our new shop vision with a GRAND OPENING PARTY that will coincide with the first ever West Tabor Village Art Walk. Come see us Thursday, Feb. 19 from 5-9p!!!

As Elizabeth would say "Weeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!
